about

'Welcome to the Carnival' was written in around 1999-2000, when Steve was a teenager. It was recorded for Inertia Reel's second album, 2002's "Soothe and Destroy" and was a live favourite every time Steve, James and Dave took to the stage. Fast forward to 2023, and Steve is now able to sing in tune (mostly) and with a less American accent, and has more of an understanding of how to record in his home studio. What better way to celebrate, and to mark 21 years of "Soothe and Destroy", than to re-record "Carnival"! For the most part the song remains unchanged, except for a slight improvement of some of the lyrics.

lyrics

Welcome to the carnival
Take a seat, enjoy the show
But I'm here too
You faked it, you liked it
Has it all become a way
To ensure you win every one of your games

What does it mean if I don't go
What does it mean if I don't show
Taking the reigns of destiny
Into a world that lies so cruel
I will no longer be a fool
Into a day we've never known
Never shown

You say you've been been round
But fallen down
Just like how I have too
Discussed it, you liked it
Has it all become a way
To explain your every reason

What does it mean if I don't go
What does it mean if I don't show
Taking the reigns of destiny
Into a world that lies so cruel
I will no longer be a fool
Into a day we've never known
Never shown

Welcome to the carnival
Take a seat, enjoy the show
But I'm here too
You faked it, you liked it
Has it all become a way
To ensure you win every one of your games

What does it mean if I don't go
What does it mean if I don't show
Taking the reigns of destiny
Into a world that lies so cruel
I will no longer be a fool
Into a day we've never known
Never shown
